Mi'kmaq History Month

October being Mi’kmaq History Month. Each year, the EECD provides schools with Mi’kmaq History Months posters, that are exquisitely and artistically created; please see the link below for posters dating back to 1998.

Posters – Mi'kmaq History Month (mikmaqhistorymonth.ca).

This year’s poster offers information about the Treaties and the Treaty relationship, and acts as a reminder that the Treaties between Nova Scotia and the Mi’kmaq are about peace and friendship. Whereas we are all Treaty People, it is important that we commit to that relationship and to working and walking together, side-by-side, along the path of Reconciliation. This years’ poster helps provide added opportunity for on-going conversations, which are a part of the journey of Reconciliation and healing for all Treaty people––and we are ALL Treaty people.

We are committed to moving forward with Truth and Reconciliation––knowing that, to achieve true Reconciliation, the truth must be told. It is important that Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous peoples take these steps together, with respect for each other and for one’s own spirit.

One of the first recommendations in the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s (TRC) Calls to Action is the land acknowledgment. This is a traditional and formal protocol said to acknowledge that you are entering into another nation’s territory. A land acknowledgement is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose territory you visit and/or reside. By acknowledging the traditional territory, we are recognizing the first peoples of this land. Here in Mi’kma’ki (NS), the first peoples are the Mi’kmaq.

Each school in HRCE provides the following land acknowledgement, each morning, as part of our daily announcements: We acknowledge that we are in Mi'kma'ki, which is the traditional ancestral territory of the Mi'kmaq people.
